How this unscrambler works

Enter the letters you have and the tool checks them against a list of more than 170,000 English words, showing every word that can be built from those letters. Results are grouped from longest to shortest, because the longest playable word is usually the one you want.

A question mark stands in for a blank tile. TEALS? finds every word that uses those five letters plus any one other letter.

The small number beside each word is its tile value, using the standard letter scores familiar from tile-based word games. It is a guide to which plays are worth the most — it does not account for premium squares on a board.

Worked example

Entering TEAL returns 16 words:

LengthWords
4 lettersLATE, TAEL, TALE, TEAL, TELA
3 lettersALE, ALT, ATE, EAT, ETA, LAT, LEA, LET, TAE, TEA, TEL

TAEL, TELA, LAT and TEL are the kind of genuine-but-obscure entries a large lexicon includes. They are real words, but worth checking before playing one in a game where words can be challenged.

About our word list. Results come from ENABLE, a large open English lexicon in the public domain, with offensive terms filtered out. It is not an official tournament dictionary, so a word that appears here may still be challenged in competitive play, and vice versa.

Built for easy reading. Turn on Large text at the top of the page for bigger type and bigger buttons. The setting is remembered on this device. If your browser supports it, the Speak letters button lets you say your letters instead of typing.

Common questions

Is this free, and do I need an account?

It is free and there is no account, no sign-up and no email required. Every feature works immediately.

Are my letters sent to a server?

No. The whole word search runs inside your browser, so the letters you type never leave your device. The word list is downloaded once and the matching happens locally.

Can I use blank or wildcard tiles?

Yes. Type ? or * for each blank tile. Each one can become any letter.

Which dictionary do you use?

A large open English word list called ENABLE, with offensive terms removed. It is not an official tournament dictionary, so competitive play may differ.

Why do some very obscure words appear?

ENABLE is comprehensive, so it includes rare but genuine English words. If a word looks unfamiliar it is worth checking before playing it in a game where words can be challenged.
